Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Players will gain the option to contest certain calls made by the official, echoing the practice already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step follows just a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there is no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another change at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
