This alliance emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government. A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Demands Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties. "Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed. The late summer revolt was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics. Terms of the New Political Agreement According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March. Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime. Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed. Wider Political Discussions Taking Place In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several leading political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests. Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
