Minister Says Ministry of Defence Looking at Potential Threat from Chinese Cars, as Personnel Advised to Avoid Secret Talk in Cars.

An defense official has confirmed that the Ministry of Defence is actively looking into the potential security risks posed by Chinese-made cars, and personnel have been advised to avoid talking about classified information in any cars.

Security Guidance for MoD Personnel

In a recently aired appearance on a radio station, a defence minister commented on claims that MoD officials have been instructed not to talk about secret information while travelling in Chinese cars.

The minister explained that the ministry is “looking into” cars from China within its fleets, however emphasised that security is a issue in all contemporary cars.

We have a collection of tens of thousands of cars in the MoD and those vehicles account for a very small number.
However regardless of if you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a car from another country, our instruction to our people is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence devices into their car, to avoid having conversations at a classified classification in any vehicle, because of the growing threats of eavesdropping that are present in every single automobile, to restrict those confidential talks in secure locations. This is a wise and reasonable thing for everyone concerned about security.

When it was suggested that it would be wise for the MoD to cease using all cars from China, the minister responded: ‘That’s exactly what we are looking into at the present time.”

Wider Defence Background

The revelation follows claims from Norway and Denmark have warned the United Kingdom to the existence of dual-use kill switches in Chinese-made buses, which could enable China to switch off public transport and cause chaos to transport systems.

Furthermore, a Russia spy ship was reportedly shining lasers at Royal Air Force pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” act by government representatives.

The broader defence situation highlights the importance of strong protocols and vigilance in all aspects of government operations, from transport use to discussions habits.
