Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Time This Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank reduced borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the count of employment gains added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of jobs created to the market in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Show Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release when the closure began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in September, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that indicated that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
